NEA Task 6 : Understanding Audience (Mass Market)

 1. What is a mass market audience? A mass market audience is an audience consisting of as many people as possible, where a product or service is sold to as many people as possible.

2. What is an independent cinema? an independent cinema is a cinema that is not part of a chain; it is a single cinema with no other locations

3. What is Onscreen magazine? Onscreen magazine is a free of charge films magazine that was released in 2013 that is given to independent cinemas. They are given out in the independant cinemas for people who want to learn about upcoming films.

4. What different sections are there on the Onscreen website and how do they appeal to a mass market audience? On the Onscreen website, there are multiple different sections: features, news, reviews, trailers, movies, win, and cinema pass. These different sections allow users to explore and discover lots of exciting new releases. They feature trailers which can be viewed in order to see what to expect about a new film. They have a cinema pass which allows customers to view movies at independent cinemas for 20% less than the price of an adult ticket. This is beneficial for Onscreen and customers as it encourages the use of independent cinemas, which is good for them.

5. How does the latest edition of Onscreen magazine appeal to a mass market audience? The latest edition of the Onscreen magazine appeals to a mass market as it features information regarding new releases that a mass market audience as it is popular and something that will be viewed commercially in chained cinemas such as Odeon. For example, they are promoting the new Indiana Jones film that is due to be released, giving the readers more information about what to expect. This meets the needs of a mass market as the readers are able to discover more information about a popular and exciting film release, something that will be wanted by all potential readers who are interested in film. They do this through lots of different films that span across lots of genres, which is very useful in attracting a large audience as there will be something that will attract everyone.

6. What is meant by cross-media convergence? Cross media convergence is where two different products or companies join together to form one product or service

7. Is there any cross media convergence between and its magazine and website? This is seen between the magazine and the website as there are similar articles about films on both the magazine and the website, which is important for them as it allows them to attract an online presence aswell as the selling of physical copies, attracting an even larger amount of people which ensures that they are gaining a large audience. Furthermore, they are making the magazine available on the website, which is a clear example of cross-media convergence.
